Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

Many of us are too young to recognize this photo of the old hospital in Munising which was located in the middle of Maple Street that now intersects with Jewell Street. It was a grand structure with open stairways and, of course, the familiar smell of ether upon entering. A government grant allowed the hospital to build a nurse’s residence next door which appeared to be excessive at that time since I only remember Lois Duncan as being the only nurse living there as most nurses had a home located in town. The nurse’s home still stands and is now a local residence. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
Here a photo of Mary Jane Ward, director of nursing for many years at MMH, during a pinning ceremony for our candy stripers. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
The old hospital was replaced by a new structure located on Sand Point Road, built in 1961 and also had a life span of a little over 50 years. Pictured is the Munising Memorial Hospital Association Board of Directors and my husband was vice president at that time. Munising was fortunate to save its hospital from being purchased by larger health care systems which was the norm at that time. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
