Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

It’s not everyday you see state and federal officials holding a press conference in the woods. I captured a great photograph of U.S. Rep. Raymond F. Clevenger and Stewart L. Udall, Secretary of the Interior from Washington, D.C., discussing the issures at the trailhead leading to Chapel Falls. I probably did these on assignment for The Mining Journal. Munising has become a popular tourist destination, drawing in over 1,3000,000 visitors in 2021 during the height of the pandemic. Of course, our main attraction is the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, 42 miles of picturesque rock formations, waterfalls and sand dunes from Munising to Grand Marais. The idea of creating this year-round wonderland along the lakshore wasn’t always always well received. Many were forced to unwillingly give up their homes, lakefront property and hunting cottages to the federal government without a say. I happened to save the proposal brochure, which was a 25 page document of captivating photos of the shoreline and probable economic impact of the lakeshore. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
