30 years ago ISHPEMING — Westwood High School has earned a national accolade for its women’s sports program. And the result is that the school will receive a financial boost to its athletic program through winning a first-place award from a national cooperative of cranberry and grapefruit growers. The Michigamme River covered County Road L.G. in seven places this morning that were passable only by truck. In some places, the road, also known as River Road, was 3 feet deep. 30 years ago MUNISING — Alger Underwater Preserve officials are soliciting reservations to attend the June 1 sinking of the tugboat Steven Selvick in Munising Bay. The tugboat is being sunk as a dive attraction for the preserve, the first such event in state history. A tour boat from Pictured Rocks Cruises in Munising will be used to bring attendees to the sinking location. 30 years ago NEGAUNEE — Television weatherman Karl Bohnak will return to his old running grounds when he carries the Olympic torch next month in Milwaukee. “It’s exciting I ran back in my high school days in Milwaukee and to go back there and carry the Olympic torch is really neat,” said Bohnak, WLUC TV-6 meteorologist for eight years. Bohnak will run with the Olympic torch in Milwaukee area on June 3 because WLUC TV in Negaunee Township is an NBC affiliate that will broadcast the Olympics.
