30 years ago HARVEY — The state has ordered Harvey Oil Company to clean up gasoline-contaminated soil and groundwater and to pay for replacing at least 10 residential wells. In an Administrative Order issued Tuesday, the Department of Environmental Quality said the contamination “poses a substantial endangerment to the public health and welfare of the environment.” The order requires Harvey Oil to comply within 30 days, because of the risk to public health, legal tactics cannot be used to delay action, said DEQ Environmental Quality Analyst Carol Stuht. 90 years ...

30 years ago MARQUETTE — The official count of people preregistered for FinnFest USA ’96 has now passed the 4,000 mark. The benchmark comes just one month after the count had’ passed 3,000 —and still two months before the national ethnic festival set to take place in Marquette, from Aug. 7 to 11. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — Although it’s scheduled to be built next week, Marquette’s Build A Dream playground project still needs volunteers for all work shifts, organizers said. Construction of the 12,000 square-foot playground at Mattson Lower Harbor Park is scheduled to begin Wednesday morning. Some 100 volunteers are needed for each of three daily shifts that run from 8 a.m. to noon, 12:30 to 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Lunch and super are provided for workers throughout the five-day project. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — Chocolay Township has turned its garbage collection over to a private company beginning today, and the pickup day for most township residents has changed. The Chocolay Township Board approved a five-year contract in April with Northern Refuse, Inc. Starting July 3, collection will include curbside pickup of recyclable materials. 30 years ago MUNISING — When 130 Munising High School students planted 3,000 trees on school forest land near Melstrand recently, forestry experts and educators hoped more than seedlings would take root. Teacher Ted Williams has been working to develop a management plan for the 40-acre school forest plot. Williams plans to use the school forest, which includes an additional 80 acres near Wetmore, for hands-on demonstrations of the principles of forestry, biology and environmental science.
