MARQUETTE — Chocolay Township has turned its garbage collection over to a private company beginning today, and the pickup day for most township residents has changed. The Chocolay Township Board approved a five-year contract in April with Northern Refuse, Inc. Starting July 3, collection will include curbside pickup of recyclable materials. The township has collected and hauled its own garbage since the late 1960s.

MARQUETTE — Lightning played hob with power lines in Marquette and nearby rural areas over the weekend, causing three major outages affecting large numbers of users and many isolated instances of power failure. Thomas Moore, director of the Marquette Board of Light and Power, said the biggest outage occurred here at 4:30 this morning and was not corrected until 8. It occurred when lightning struck a line in the north portion of Marquette, cutting off service to customers in the College Ave-Second St. area and surrounding blocks. A larger area of the city was affected between 7 and 8 a.m. since major switching required to restore power was done at that time.

Starting at $3.23/week.
