30 years ago NEGAUNEE – Today’s spring storm broke the record for all-time snowiest winter in Marquette County. “It’s official. We broke the record,” said meteorologist Greg Forrester with the National Weather Service in Negaunee Township. “It’s the snowiest we know of – of any weather records in Marquette County.” At 10:15 a.m., the official seasonal snowfall at the Marquette County Airport was 244.7 inches, breaking the record of 243.8 inches set during the winter of 1981-1982. “The snowfall this morning is running about three quarters of an inch per hour,” ...

30 years ago MARQUETTE – Musician’s Federation Local 218 of the American Federation of Musicians, AFL-CIO, celebrates the 65th anniversary of the granting of its charter Sunday, April 28, with a dinner at the Marquette Elks Club. The local was formed as the Marquette Musicians’ Protective Union April 15, 1931, with eight charter members. Their charter was granted two weeks later by the Federation. Miss Evelyn Hokenson was the first female member, granted membership Sept. 14, 1931. When formed the local had jurisdiction within a radius of 20 miles from the City Hall of Marquette. ...

30 years ago MARQUETTE – DynamO, an internationally acclaimed troupe that describes itself as a “theatre of acrobatic movement,” will perform Friday at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette. DynamO has performed more than 2,000 times for nearly a million people since founding in 1981 – playing everywhere from the Lincoln Center in New York to the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – A Marquette middle school teacher was one of 50 educators honored Tuesday by President Clinton during a rose ceremony in the White House Rose Garden. Sharon Green, who teaches music and social studies at Graveraet Middle School and has been named Michigan’s teacher of the year, spoke briefly with Clinton before attending the event honoring the nation’s best educators. 30 YEARS AGO MARQUETTE – Former area resident Matthew C. Peterson was recently selected for having an outstanding student presentation at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. Peterson is pursuing his doctorate at Michigan Tech University on a NASA fellowship. His award-winning presentation described results from his measurements of nitrogen oxide air pollutants on the Azores Islands in 1993. This is part of an ongoing study related to atmospheric greenhouse gases. Peterson is currently conducting additional field measurements in Newfoundland. He will ...
