30 years ago MARQUETTE – The greenbacks in John Peterson’s hand were crisp and clean and they grabbed the attention of the student body Tuesday morning at the Marquette Senior High School gymnasium. Peterson, the assistant high school principal, officially kicked off the Redmen Renaissance program. The $35 he carried was one of many rewards bestowed upon students who have exhibited excellence or improvement in grades and attendance. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Local artist Jill Kline will be signing her two new limited edition prints at The Artworks Gallery from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27. Kline was last year’s recipient of the First of America Bank’s Directors’ Choice Award and has been accepted into the prestigious Colored Pencil Society of America’s International Exhibit for the last two years. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – K.L. Cool rock-and-rolled into the Upper Peninsula Tuesday and brought with him a new old friend. Sporting a Snoopy tie, a duck hunting pin and a boom box used for an earlier employee presentation, the new director of the Department of Natural Resources said his first goal is to “stabilize leadership” within the DNR. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – The group of lawyers and associates raising funds for a $2,500 painting of retired Marquette County Circuit Judge Raymond Jason has reached its goal. Attorney Mark Stevens of Marquette said the money for the oil-on-canvas portrait was raised in little more than a week with the help of a $500 donation from Marquette County Courthouse employees. The portrait will be painted by Marquette artist Paul grant. It will hang in the county circuit courtroom with portraits of 10 other former Circuit judges.
