NEGAUNEE – Have basketball, will travel. Former Northern Michigan University cage standout Kyle David took to the friendly skies after graduating in 1994, eventually landing in a professional league in Denmark. He played for Stebensakt of Copenhagen last season and averaged 15 points a game for a team which finished second overall in the Danish Elite league. “After my college career was over, I still wanted to keep playing,” said David, a member of Shirt Tails of Iron Mountain in the Class A portion of the Negaunee Invitational Basketball Tournament. “A couple of guys from Michigan Tech – Matt Trombley and Pete Hoffman – are over there and (NMU women’s coach) Mike Geary knew someone who connected me. A lot of it is just meeting the right people.” Standing 6-foot-7, David was an AP, UPI, and Detroit Free Press First Team All-Stater as a senior at St. Mary’s High in Gaylord, Michigan. Once at Northern, he improved throughout the four years, finishing in the top 15 on NMU’s all-time scoring list.

MARQUETTE COUNTY – The smelt runs have started. The Marquette regional office of the Michigan Department of Conservation reported today that runs have begun in this area in the Dead, Carp and Chocolay Rivers. Peak of the run is not expected for a few days, however. In the Escanaba area, where smelt runs begin sooner than they do on the Lake Superior side of the Upper Peninsula, runs were described as very heavy.

Starting at $3.23/week.
