30 YEARS AGO

MARQUETTE – Former area resident Matthew C. Peterson was recently selected for having an outstanding student presentation at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. Peterson is pursuing his doctorate at Michigan Tech University on a NASA fellowship. His award-winning presentation described results from his measurements of nitrogen oxide air pollutants on the Azores Islands in 1993. This is part of an ongoing study related to atmospheric greenhouse gases. Peterson is currently conducting additional field measurements in Newfoundland. He will be recognized for his achievements in an upcoming issue of the EOS science journal.

60 YEARS AGO

MARQUETTE – A large crowd is expected to be on hand at the Marquette County Airport tomorrow afternoon to welcome House Republican Leader Gerald R. Ford to Marquette County. Rep. Ford, scheduled to arrive by private plane at 3:30 p.m., will be the principal speaker at the 1966 Republican fund-raising dinner 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Northern Michigan University.
