MARQUETTE – Musician’s Federation Local 218 of the American Federation of Musicians, AFL-CIO, celebrates the 65th anniversary of the granting of its charter Sunday, April 28, with a dinner at the Marquette Elks Club. The local was formed as the Marquette Musicians’ Protective Union April 15, 1931, with eight charter members. Their charter was granted two weeks later by the Federation. Miss Evelyn Hokenson was the first female member, granted membership Sept. 14, 1931. When formed the local had jurisdiction within a radius of 20 miles from the City Hall of Marquette. Since then, the local has grown to encompass the entire Upper Peninsula, including Mackinac Island and now boasts four members with 60 or more years of membership. Walt Mackey, a young man of 78, is the longest-serving active member.

60 years ago

MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University honored its outstanding students yesterday during the annual honors convocation, one of the academic highlights of the year. Honored were 122 students who have maintained a scholastic index of 3.5 or better out of a possible 4.0, including four all-A freshmen. The students were presented with engraved certificates of award by Dr. David W. D. Dickinson, NMU’s dean of arts and science. Dr. Milton B. Byrd, vice president for academic affairs, presided at the 11th annual honors convocation.
