Down Memory Lane with Mary Jayne

Seeing a collection of antique radios in the ‘Gallery Coffee Shop’ in Munising reminded me of the good old days (before TV) where my folks, brother and I listened to news, music and soap operas on the radio. This brings back memories especially from the 40’s and early 50’s where programs such as the ‘Green Hornet’ and ‘One Man’s Family’ and Wednesday night with ‘The Lux Theater’ were on for a whole hour. Visiting New York City in 1951 when my husband was attending the New York Institute of Photography, I was lucky enough to get tickets to Radio City to watch a live performance of ‘One Man’s Family’ with microphone and scripts in hand narrating the show. What a treat, especially watching the sound effects man. During the days of radio I especially remember when the beginning of World War 11 (Pearl Harbor) on December 7, 1941. We were just bringing in a freshly cut tree for Christmas when the sober news was announced on the radio. A day not to forget.

This being the new playground in Munising which will be getting used with school getting started this week. Oh to be a kid again!!

Munising used to have several social clubs, this being one of them, the Alger County handicraft club. This photo was taken in the 50’s or 60’s. Although I wasn’t a member of this this one I became very involved in the BPW (National Business and Professional Women Club). Back then Rotary was for men only (no problem) so BPW was a place for professional women for camaraderie and sharing of ideas.
