30 years ago MARQUETTE – The group of lawyers and associates raising funds for a $2,500 painting of retired Marquette County Circuit Judge Raymond Jason has reached its goal. Attorney Mark Stevens of Marquette said the money for the oil-on-canvas portrait was raised in little more than a week with the help of a $500 donation from Marquette County Courthouse employees. The portrait will be painted by Marquette artist Paul grant. It will hang in the county circuit courtroom with portraits of 10 other former Circuit judges. 30 years ago ISHPEMING – Dan Mouch hasn’t bowled very often—or well—at Country Lanes in Ishpeming. That all changed Wednesday night when the 23-year-old Marquette resident rolled his first career 300 game in the Country Classic League. Burying his first 12 balls of the night in the strike pocket, Mouch added games of 147 and 257 for a 704 series. The 300 was the sixth bowled at Country Lanes and ninth bowled in Marquette County this season. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – Marquette’s Northern Lites women’s hockey team, which plays its home games at Northern Michigan University’s PEIF ice arena, has been gaining experience and community support since its inception back in the late 1970’s. The 20 women on the team have built a reputation for the Lites as one of the formidable women’s squads in the Midwest. “In 1977 or 78’ they were playing intramural (hockey) here at Northern, and that’s when a lot of these players started,” said Kelly December, who has played defense for the Lites the past 10 years. 30 years ago NEGAUNEE – The 32nd Annual Negaunee Invitational Basketball Tournament got underway Friday night at Negaunee’s Memorial Gymnasium. North Country Engineering of Negaunee must have drawn a good game plan as it defeated the Westwood Rejects of Ishpeming, 71-60, in Class EE. North Country’s Steve Heliin led his team with 13 points, while teammates Pete Borlace and Jeff Poutanen pitched in 12 apiece. Dan Etelamaki pumped in game-high 19 points for the Rejects. 30 years ago MARQUETTE – A downstate television station owner has applied for a permit to build a new station in Marquette. Thomas Scanlan of Traverse City, who currently owns WGTU/WGTQ channels 29 and 8 in Traverse City and Sault Ste. Marie, wants to broadcast on Channel 19 in Marquette. The Federal Communications Commission set aside Channel 19 for Marquette in the late 1980s and awarded a construction permit to a Green Bay, Wis. Television executive. 30 years ago SKANDIA – You can keep “The Hokey Pokey” as far the second graders in Nina Olsen’s class at Skandia Elementary School are concerned. The top song on their dance chart is the “Don’t Be Lazy Song,” an energetic ditty they learned Monday during a “March is Nutrition Month” program. “I used to be lazy but now I’m not,” confided Susan Maki as she and her classmates jumped, shook, and marched along to the beat.
