Mrs. Frances Drake, Marquette, clerk in charge of the board’s office, Post Office Building, said the group will comprise the second portion of the 198th pre-induction call under the 1948 Draft Act as amended. 60 years ago NEGAUNEE – Helen Barabe, a member of the senior class, is the newly elected president of the St. Paul High School Student Council, Sister Mary Angelica, principal, announced today. Election of new officers climaxed a strenuous week of campaigning at the parochial school last week, during which candidates displayed posters and distributed tags in attempting to gain votes. 60 years ago MARQUETTE – An escape try by a federal prisoner being held in the Marquette County Jail was discovered Saturday, Sheriff Adrian A Pequet reported this morning. Officers making a routine check found that Roy Waldo, Reed City, one of three federal prisoners awaiting trial in U.S. District Court here next month on charges of bank robbery, had cut a hole in the ceiling of his cell, using a piece of steel he had concealed in the sole of his shoe. 60 years ago BARAGA COUNTY – A Michigan Technological University forestry professor is attempting to increase the songbird population in the Upper Peninsula and save large stands of jack pine from destruction by insects. Dr. Norman Sloan has spent the summer living in the bush on the Baraga Plains in an effort to reduce an infestation of jack pine budworm. Damage to trees in this area is already heavy, and if not controlled, may lead to total destruction of valuable forests. 60 years ago MARQUETTE – Eight Marquette men were arrested this week after it was discovered that the Simmons Brothers warehouse had been burglarized and a large amount of beer and wine taken. All eight appeared in Marquette Township Court before Justice George J. Fezzey Wednesday.
