MUNISING -- Heavy snow whipped by 40-mile-an-hour winds, brought activities here to a standstill yesterday as one of the worst storms to be recorded this early in November hit the Alger area. Extremely high winds blew all Wednesday night, then early Thursday morning heavy snow started to fall. By noon, visibility was practically zero and many cars had become stuck in drifts from two to three feet high. All Munising public and parochial schools were dismissed at noon and children from rural areas were rushed home by bus. The second working shift at the Forrest Center sawmill located eight miles east of the city, was cancelled because of conditions and several business places closed early to permit employees more time for traveling. All meetings scheduled for last night also were cancelled. During the past three days this area received a total of 13 inches of snow, according to the weather station at the forest ranger's office here.

MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Under sponsorship of the American Legion, 8,000 rural schools in Michigan will dedicate new flags November 13. The flags, a joint project of the state department of public instruction and the American Legion, were made by 120 women in Grand Rapids under the Michigan Works Progress administration. Thirty-seven of these flags have been received by Stanley Williams, Marquette County Commissioner of Schools. He is cooperating with county Legion posts for many programs for "American Education Week," starting November 9.
