MARQUETTE -- Electric power in most of Marquette was cut off in mid-afternoon yesterday when a large crane owned by the Don Britton Construction Co. of Marquette accidentally struck a high voltage line, city officials reported today. Power was cut off from about 3 to 3:18 p.m. in most of North Marquette, along Third and Fourth Sts. And in the downtown business area. Ron Lindeblad, office manager of Light and Power, said the circuit breaker at the city's hydro-electric plant on Wright St. opened when the Britton crane struck the high voltage power line at the corner of Bluff and N. Front St. Britton is doing some work at the site of the Clifton Hotel, which was destroyed by fire last year. At first it was thought that the high winds which prevailed yesterday caused one wire to go against another or limbs of trees to slash the lines, causing the cutoff. An immediate investigation was launched, however, and the exact cause was discovered shortly after the power cutoff.
