Munising boys lead area teams at Division 3 regional track meet at Rapid River

RAPID RIVER — Led by the Munising High School boys team, three area squads had a field day — and a track day — at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 3 regional track and field meet on Thursday.

Seven schools converged at Rapid River High School with the host Rockets winning both boys and girls meets.

But the Mustangs boys were a solid runner-up in their meet as RR had 64 points and Munising 52. Superior Central was a distant third with 22 1/2 and Republic-Michigamme was right behind with 21. Engadine had 17 and Big Bay de Noc 1 1/2.

RR easily won the girls meet with the same 64 points, with Mid Peninsula second with 39. Munising was third with 27 and Engadine had 22. SC was fifth with 12 1/2, R-M sixth with 6 and BBdN had 4 1/2.

The top four finishers in each event, including relays, qualify for the U.P. Finals to be held in Kingsford in just over two weeks on June 5.

Boys meet

A quick count showed Munising qualifying 19 times for the finals, including all four of its relays.

The Mustangs were runners-up in the 400- and 3,200-meter relays and third in the 800 and 1,600.

Three of those relays — the 400, 800 and 1,600 — were led off by Matthew Lindquist and also included Reece Cotey.

Chad Trepczyk was on the 400 and 800, Jacob Mattson on the 400 and 1,600, Desmond Anderson on the 800 and Alex VanZandt on the 1,600.

Four different runners were on the 3,200 — Noah Lincoln, Keelan Mulye, Logan Gould and Larson Nebel.

Two other Munising athletes qualified in three individual events.

Micaiah Peramaki was a double winner, taking the 100 dash in 12.04 seconds and 200 in 24.05, while finishing third in the discus.

Jesse Durant won the 110 hurdles in 21.16 seconds and was second in both the 300 hurdles and high jump.

Reagan Bowerman was second in both the 110 hurdles and pole vault, while Quentin McNally was third in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Ashton Wymer was runner-up in the shot put.

Several of Munising’s relay qualifiers also placed in the top-four in individual events.

Mulye was third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600, while VanZandt was also third in 400 and Anderson fourth in the 100.

From Superior Central, Zach Frusti was the only multiple qualifier in individual events, as he finished third in the 100 and long jump and fourth in the high jump.

The Cougars’ Kyle Frusti was second in the discus, Wyatt Kulik third in the 800, Lucas Swetich fourth in the 200 and Logan Frusti fourth in the 110 hurdles.

SC saved its best for relays, though, winning both the 400 (47.48 seconds) and 800 (1:41.85).

Those relays had three runners in common — Mathew McLaury, James Maki and Clayton Collier — with Zach Frusti on the 400 and Swetich on the 800.

For Republic-Michigamme, Isaac Lawrence was the star with three runner-up finishes in the 100, 200 and long jump.

Also placing second was the Hawks’ Samuel Dyer in the 400, Brandon Skogman in the 800, Gabe Dupont in the 1,600 and an R-M quartet of Dupont, Jacob Durden, Dyer and Lawrence in the 1,600 relay.

Girls meet

The wholesale numbers weren’t as impressive as in the boys meet, but Munising still had a pair of regional champions in the girls meet.

Sabryna Smith won the 200 in 30.08, while the Mustangs’ 1,600 relay was victorious in 4:51.79 with Valerie Johnson, Jenna Matson, Monique Brisson and Smith.

Smith also made the U.P. Finals by finishing second in the 400 and third in the 100.

Brisson was also a three-time individual qualifier, placing second in the 1,600 and third in the 800 and 3,200, while Matson added a runner-up spot in the 800 and third in the 1,600.

SC’s Riley Johnson was runner-up in both the 100 hurdles and high jump, while Emma Rutter was fourth in the long jump and shot put.

The Cougars’ 400 relay was second and 800 relay third with the same four girls — Rutter, Johnson, Alice Hancock and Madisyn Tyner.

R-M’s lone scorer was Leah McCracken, who was second in both the discus and shot put.
