Power of propaganda

Very often, people in this country do not see clearly that which is so obvious to non-Americans. The following offers two quotes from a famous modern author from Canada. The author eloquently and succinctly states the obvious: "The unthinkable is made real not through rational thought, but feelings. We'll follow a charismatic leader if they tell us that we have a legitimate grievance. That they will give us back our dignity. Our threatened way of life. If we follow them, our enemies will be vanquished and we will be heroes (patriots). Who doesn't want to be part of something bigger ...

Recycling essential

To the Journal editor: My husband and I recently took a tour of our Marquette County Landfill and Recycling Center. The tour gave us an up close and personal view of how the items we recycle each week are sorted and processed. We realized how important it is for us to recycle items that would otherwise end up in the landfill. We are so lucky to have this facility here and I implore everyone who is able, to recycle and ensure a longer life of our landfill and a better environment for our future generations.

Putting up with it

To the Journal editor: We don't hear whining coming from the babies who've died of starvation, or children who've died from a preventable disease or moans from those who've died of/from painful acute and chronic untreated ailments that were treated in a now shuttered hospital when health insurance offset the expense of medical care and medicine. We are expected to accept an economy having no other plan than to financially and materially enrich those (1%) who strangely enough claim to be taking care of the rest of us while in fact we've been supporting them. We are also expected to ...

‘I was only following orders’

To the Journal editor: That statement was heard multiple times from Nazis during the Nuremburg trials after World War II as a defense to allegations that Nazi soldiers had committed war crimes. On Nov. 20, a half dozen veterans publicly reminded active duty military personnel that the U.S. Code of Military Justice directs our military personnel not to follow illegal orders. President Trump’s immediate response was to publicly state that these respected experts were traitors and should be hanged. President Trump is the commander in chief of our military. His statement is a dramatic ...

Don’t fear socialism

I’ve always been perplexed by people who make an enemy out of socialism. What is socialism but the guarantee of essential services and protections for oppressed peoples? For example, who can genuinely be angry with rent stabilization policies besides a landlord who doesn’t want to give their tenants a fair deal? Beyond rent stabilization, policies pursuing free and equal education, housing, jobs, and peace doesn’t sound like some hellscape, but rather pursuing a better American society. The Republican establishment, of which Donald Trump is the ringleader, is just tricking you ...

Rule of law a bedrock principle

To the Journal editor: In the United States of America, we have a principal that has held us together as a nation since 1788 when our Constitution was ratified. This is the rule of law. This means that everyone, including the president, is accountable to the Constitution; laws duly enacted by state and local governments; and orders issued by the courts. Our Constitution, laws and courts are, like anything else, produced by humans and are not always perfect. However, their goal has always been to provide for our well-being and to promote justice. Until recently, this has been something ...
