Volunteers saluted
To the Journal editor:
April 19-25 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and at Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti, we proudly recognize and thank all of our volunteers, past and present. Their compassion, generosity, and dedication play a vital role in helping us provide an enhanced quality of life for the veteran members who call our Home their residence.
MVHDJJ is incredibly fortunate to be part of such a caring and supportive community. Whenever we put out a call for help, our volunteers and community partners respond wholeheartedly. In 2026, we are grateful to have a vibrant in-person volunteer program that continues to make a meaningful difference each day.
Our volunteers assist with activities such as bingo, music, onsite lunches, craft projects, and coffee klatches. They offer friendly visits, accompany members on outings, support veterans at end-of-life through our “No Member Dies Alone” program, and bring their wonderful dogs for pet therapy visits. Local service organizations and businesses also enrich life at the Home by hosting lunches and sponsoring special events such as fishponds, ice cream socials, and grounds cleanups.
Our volunteers represent veterans service organizations, service clubs, local businesses, schools, churches, and many other community groups. Others serve simply because they believe veterans deserve our gratitude and care. Together, our registered volunteers have donated more than 77,000 lifetime hours to our Home.
The support shown by this community is truly extraordinary. Whether through ongoing service, a special project, or a one-time partnership, every act of kindness makes a difference. We encourage others to consider joining us in serving those who served.
As H. Jackson Browne Jr. said, “Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more.”
On behalf of our veteran members and staff, we salute all volunteers–and especially the dedicated volunteers of MVH D.J. Jacobetti–during National Volunteer Appreciation Week.
With gratitude,
