Neighbors helping neighbors

To the Journal editor: Messiah Lutheran Church has maintained a Community Assistance Fund for several years and as the needs in our community grow, so does the need for growing this fund. This year, we will exceed $50,000 contributed to help over 320 families. The majority of this funding comes from our Giving Tuesday event. We invite our caring Marquette community to join us on Dec. 2 between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. to help  us help our neighbors by making a contribution. Food, fellowship and a chance to win raffle prizes are on the agenda. All are welcome.

Bergman support needed in HR

To the Journal editor: With the swearing in of U.S. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Arizona, on Wednesday, the U.S. House of Representatives was able to vote on the discharge petition of the Jeffrey Epstein files. This petition directs the Department of Justice to release the unclassified records in their possession that relate to Jeffery Epstein. All of the Democratic representatives in the House, along with four Republicans, voted to release these files. A name missing on the vote to release the files was Jack Bergman. Shutdown winners, losers

Democrats seem to be furious that eight senators “caved” and ended the shutdown. I’m not upset about what they did. The people who bore the cost of the shutdown were primarily the poor and those employees forced to work without pay. Shutdowns usually boomerang on the party that initiates them and the Democrats were fortunate that it did not happen this time, at least not yet. The benefit to the party was that the cost of health care insurance became raised and should remain a major influence in the mid-term elections next year. That has to make Republicans nervous. Recent election news offers hope for people in U.P.

Democrats won big (one week ago) Tuesday, in favor of moderate Democratic governors in Virginia and New Jersey, in favor of new congresional districts in Caifornia and in favor of Zohran Mamdani for the mayor of New York City. Mamdani's campaign excited young people who have lost hope and that is a good sign for the future, not just in New York but in Michigan as well. CBS released the full transcript of Norah O’Donnell’s interview with President Trump for the television show “60 Minutes” on Nov. 2. As he often does, the president made up numbers that have no basis in reality and pretended they are facts. This is one example of a statement he made in the "60 Minutes" interview regarding the United States military blowing up boats in the Caribbean: “Every single boat that you see that's shot down kills 25,000 on drugs and destroys families all over our country.” This year there have been at least 12 boats bombed by our military.
