Negaunee City Band to play Pioneer Week concert

NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee City Band concert will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, for this week only in order to avoid conflict with other scheduled events. Concerts are held at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street. A special feature of the concert is a trumpet solo, “Gabriel’s Oboe,” by Randy Veale, retired high school band director. MARQUETTE — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently announced appointments state boards and commissions recently. Several Upper Peninsula residents were among those named.  • Michigan Truck Safety Commission  Pete Torola, of Chassell, is a research engineer at Michigan Tech University. Distressed swimmers rescued in Bay Mills

BAY MILLS — The Bay Mills Police Department released a statement that detailed a rescue that occurred on Saturday. “We had an emergency where several swimmers, including kids and an adult, who were in distress in Lake Superior (St. Mary's River system),” read the statement. “Officers Weist, Goetz and Curtis arrived on scene and immediately jumped in and swam to assist them.
