Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

Many of us look forward to a winter stroll in the woods or even more so a ritual walk to ice formations along Lake Superior. My daughter is pictured here along Grand Island a few years back after we skied across the bay from the mainland at Sand Point. The traffic on the ice that year was busy with snowmobiles, skiing, walking, and even parents strolling their youngsters in bike carriers fitted with skies. Good times! Being a patient in the hospital can bring about many surprises but here in the UP we see some unique ones. The old hospital located along the Lake Superior shore on Sand Point Road would get an abundance of snow, especially for those with a lakeside view. It’s not very often you hear a tap on your window only to see a group of local boy scouts shoveling the excess snow to regain that view of Lake Superior. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
And if you ever take a look at the shape of our state you will see that it takes the shape of a pair of mittens. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
