Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

When I was growing up in Munising during the 1940s, restaurants were very family oriented. Mary’s Grill, owned by the Gherandus family, was a great place to go and sit in a booth or at the nostalgic counter pictured here. They lived across the street from our family on East Onota, just a stone’s throw from their restaurant. Back then, Putvin’s Drug Store also had a soda fountain with booths. Back in the day, I remember going to Putvin’s for an ice cream sundae or a soda maybe once a week. What a treat. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
Another popular restaurant in the 40s and 50s as mentioned before in my column was the Candy Cafe (more commonly known as the Candy Kitchen) and was owned by Nick and Chris Booth. Even at the age of 95, I have vivid memories of their yummy soft-serve ice cream, a very popular treat after a Sunday night movie at the local Delft Theater. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
