Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

I happened to come across a very old picture of the camera club I belonged to in the late 1940. Munising had a very active camera club called Municam and as you can see I was the youngest member in this picture. Members were from all walks of professional life: a newspaper employee; a manager of our local Delft Theater; a schoolteacher; the Taylor Cleaners manager; my mentor, Lucille; and, of course, myself in my late teens. We met monthly and shared photos we had taken according to a theme. It was kind of a competition among ourselves. Having a camera back then was a luxury and photography was an art to be learned, nothing compared to with our modern digital photography. Film had to be purchased at the local drug store and they would sometimes load the film into your camera. After snapping the designated number of photos the film would be sent off in the mail to be processed. I don’t think any of us in the camera club had a darkroom back then. I enjoyed traveling to Marquette with our group and meeting with their local camera club, maybe once a year. I especially remember meeting at the home of Rollin and Betty Thoren (Northern Michigan University professor) and I’ll never forget they had eight children and the house was always immaculate. Fond memories!
Many years ago when it was legal to feed the deer at Presque Isle Park in Marquette, this albino would appear occasionally. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
