All about TOWN

Living in Munising all my life, I’m quite fascinated to look back at the changes in visitor lodging in Alger County. For instance, my husband rented a room in a boarding house just down the street from me when he first moved to Munising for work in the late 1940s. In those days, women (mostly widowed) would earn a living by renting a room in their house and guests would share a bathroom. I also remember the generic motels in town (The Vacationer, Northern, Terrace. Greenland, Sunset Motel on the Bay, Peterson’s cabins, to name a few) followed by some national chains. The spike in tourism in Munising the past few years has allowed some entrepreneurs to get pretty creative with housing options. Pictured here is the most recent lodging concept (Explore Munising Alger Falls) located adjacent to Alger Falls on M-28 coming in from the east side of town. The modern yet rustic feel of the cottages make you fell like you’re part of the environment as you can see nature head on through large glass windows from the comfort of your bed and fire-pit seating area for each unit. It’s easy to see why it’s considered a haven for ecotourist. A must see for those stopping through town. (Photo by Mary Jayne Hallifax)
On a recent ride outside of town looking at th ecolor, we came across this place to buy fresh eggs. Unfortunately, they were out of eggs but maybe next week. (Photo by Mary Jayne Hallifax)
Looking through old newspapers came across this Mining Journal I think from 1950 and this is the price. (Photo by Mary Jayne Hallifax)
