All about TOWN

with Mary Jayne

Another changing of the guard when it comes to a grocery store in Munising. Bob’s IGA closed a few months ago after a successful career in supplying us with our daily needs. The new signs for Pat’s Foods makes the change more official. Being 94 years old, I remember when the first co-op came to town with carts to pick out your own groceries. Thought this would never go over with people picking out their own. Back then, people would only purchase what they needed for a few days or a week and, or course, there was no such thing as a credit card. You bought what you could afford. My dad’s store, O.A. Shampine Meat and Groceries operated on the old school method of picking out the groceries for the customer from behind the counter, just like Mr. Godsey on “The Waltons.” (Photo by Mary Jayne Hallifax)
Most folks seem to enjoy watching the freighters come into town to deliver coal to our local mill. Recently, we saw the Herbert C. Jackson dock in Munising and provided several hours of entertainment to locals and tourists alike. (Photo by Mary Jayne Hallifax)
Here is some of the coal dropped off by the Jackson. (Photo by Mary Jayne Hallifax)
