Down memory LANE

with Mary Jayne

This one is truly down memory lane as this was Troms Snack Shop on 208 West Superior St. (now part of the Barge Inn) which at least in the 40’s was a very popular spot to have a snack. In fact when my husband came to town in 1948 this was his mid -afternoon stop and his first experience with a PASTY. He saw the writing on the menu and thinking it was a pastry, ordered one and when it came said “WHAT IS THIS”? And he met my parents there mid-afternoon for coffee before he met me. All history. Clinton Tromater had the shop for many years: it later became the Munising Senior Center and then merged to the Barge Inn. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
For several years, the Munising pier was the place to be on Tuesday mornings as the South American cruise ship would stop in Munising for several hours and of course the Munising High School band always greeted them with music as shown here. On the final trip of the season the boat would have the band members come onto the ship and they would have the afternoon sailing as the ship made its way to the next stop which was Houghton. Then the band would disembark and travel back to Munising on their school bus after an unforgettable experience. The South American and North American were built with the great lakes in mind so they didn’t have the same difficulties docking as the recent Viking trips to Houghton. Not such a memorable occasion was one summer (no memory of which year we had a terrific storm and what appeared to be a mini tornado caused a lot of damage at the Munising tourist park with a lot of damage ot campers and cars. No injuries, just a lot of damage, fortunately. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
