Down Memory LANE

With Mary Jayne

This happens to be one of the most recent signs posted in downtown Munising by the Alger Chamber of Commerce Munising Bay Partnership. It certainly did bring back memories of each Tuesday morning for several summers in Munising, I believe the early 1950s, when the South American came cruising into Munising for a few hours of excitement for the town. The tourists always enjoyed disembarking, strolling up into the main section of town and most generally purchasing Munising  Woodenware products being offered particularily in Denman’s Department Store window. I so remember those mornings when all of Munising would be down watching the ship come in, the high school band would play a few numbers. And then, on the last Tuesday, they would be in for the season. They would treat the band to a trip on the ship up to Houghton which took several hours after leaving Munising. What excitement for the bandmembers. Then, the school would have its buses up in Houghton, ready to  bring the band back home. Memories, memories. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
I believe this photo is what the wall painting was copied from. It had indicated it had come from from the historical society and I did recognize it as mine. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
This was a portion of the Denman’s Department Store Munising Bowls flyer. They had a huge display of all the items. I miss them a lot. They were purchased for gifts and now are very collectable. (Photo courtesy of Mary Jayne Hallifax)
This shows the two catamarans of the Pictured Rocks cruise fleet standing ready for their first cruise of the 2021 season on Saturday at 2 p.m. For the early birds, there will probably be plenty of room and cold, however no doubt the season will soon be bursting.
