Letters To The Editor

Only fear

To the Journal editor: Throughout history fear has inflicted horrific toll on human life and liberties. Our Framers understood how Kings used fear to achieve unwavering loyalty, anyone who disobeys the King is sent to the gallows. I tested my civics knowledge by taking a test every immigrant is required pass to gain citizenship, it’s located at uscis.gov and I challenge everyone to do the same. One of the questions inspired me to write: “What do we show loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance? Your State, United States, Congress, or President”. It’s no secret we are ...

Border balances

To the Journal editor: The migration bottleneck at the southern border centers on those seeking asylum, a legal method of entry into the United States. Unlike refugees, asylum seekers must first be on U.S. soil or port of entry in order to request asylum. After one year of being granted asylum, an immigrant can apply for permanent residency (uscis.gov/humanitarian/refugees-and-asylum). The president sets the maximum number of refugees allowed into the country. In contrast, the number of immigrants that can request and be granted asylum is, by law, unlimited (americanbar.org/news ...

Note to Brumm

To the Journal editor: Oh Margaret, to quote your comment in the recent Mining Journal (Jan. 26), “We just didn’t spend that much time talking about Native Americans … it just wasn’t part of our thinking,” she said. Guess what? Times change. There was actually a time in our United States history when it was acceptable to segregate schools, restrooms, buses, etc. We don’t hold on to mascots for sentimental reasons, regardless of how many of our relatives wore them in their heydays. Some find it offensive.   We understand you are a smart person, as you have repeatedly ...

Police thanked

To the Journal editor: On Jan. 22 of this year, Marquette police disarmed a man who had pulled a gun inside the city’s police station. Thankfully, no one was killed and injuries were minimal. The suspect was taken alive and is undergoing psychiatric treatment before trial. This dangerous situation could have ended much worse. In hold up my sincere applause and appreciation to Marquette police chief Ryan Grimm, Marquette County Sheriff Sheriff Greg Zyburt, and all officers of the city, Michigan State Police and Northern Michigan University Public Safety who resolved this dangerous ...

Legacy will tell tale

To the Journal editor: Some of the worst atrocities in human history have included individuals “going along to get along.” Recall German citizens quietly accepting, ignoring, or even supporting the Holocaust. It is challenging to speak out against wrongdoing if you expect repercussions. Dilemma: courage or cowardice. “There are none so blind as those who do not wish to see.” How many times has a group or individual used strategic ignorance to gain cover or provide cover for illegal, immoral, or irresponsible behavior? This is a simple mental exercise to push away ...
