Ishpeming highway cleanup positive

To the Journal editor: The Ishpeming Lions Club is the oldest Adopt-A Highway volunteer group in the Upper Peninsula. Twice a year, we clean up the two-mile section of U.S. 41 from the west Ishpeming stoplight to the Ski Hall of Fame. In the decades of participating in this project, this little stretch of thoroughfare has become a source of seasonal reflection for me. To the Journal editor: In the Sept.16-17 issue, The Mining Journal printed a (Letter to the Editor) entitled “Solar by example an excellent idea for Marquette Township,” praising Marquette Township for building a solar array to power their community center with that clean, renewable energy source. Change mascot with much care

To the Journal editor: It is true that many athletic mascots still exist today that offend considerable segments of our society either in their names or in the portrayal of their names. When a majority of all decent people affected by a mascot agree that these offensive elements exist, then they should be changed. This is the beauty of democracy. However, there should not be a meat-ax overreaction. Not all mascots that only a few find offensive need to be abolished. To the Journal editor: September is here and time for weather to change, we will still have some warm days. But more darkness as the days get shorter. But think of the positive. You don’t have to close your windows because of the heat. Let in some of the fresh air, put the air conditioner off and enjoy the comfort of getting the heat to where you like it.
