Police thanked

To the Journal editor:

On Jan. 22 of this year, Marquette police disarmed a man who had pulled a gun inside the city’s police station.

Thankfully, no one was killed and injuries were minimal. The suspect was taken alive and is undergoing psychiatric treatment before trial.

This dangerous situation could have ended much worse. In hold up my sincere applause and appreciation to Marquette police chief Ryan Grimm, Marquette County Sheriff Sheriff Greg Zyburt, and all officers of the city, Michigan State Police and Northern Michigan University Public Safety who resolved this dangerous situation.

And I commend especially Zyburt’s efforts in getting crisis intervention training for mental health incidents for so many local officers.

From me, this is no faint praise. I have long been a critic of law enforcement in America, and have had harsh words for local law enforcement agencies in the past.

I can say today that many of my concerns have been put to rest by these extraordinary officer’s actions that day.

I commend Marquette law enforcement professionals for being a leader in strong and humane community policing and for setting the example, no, the standard for Police across America to follow.
