30 years ago MARQUETTE — “Glacier Glide 1995: Art on the Ice” drew a record crowd at the Presque Isle outdoor exhibit put on by the Lake Superior Arts Association. At the event, Judge Mark Deloria tacked the blue ribbon to the winning fiber piece, “Northern Lights” by Betty Junnach. This year’s theme was “Winter Comforts” and residents donated blankets in exchange for an “Art on the Rocks” poster. The blankets were donated to families of the Head Start program of AMCAP. 30 years ago NATIONAL MINE — Firefighters this morning were continuing to battle a stubborn coal fire in a storage building at the Tilden Mine. The fire was discovered early Tuesday morning in a storage building containing a pile of several thousand tons of western coal, said Don Ryan, spokesman for mine manager Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. The fire is small but stubborn, Ryan said. He said officials are using foam to attack the fire. Tilden employees will remove the coal not on fire so the location of the fire can be pinpointed. One of the original members who helped organize the department in 1963, Johnson served in the department for 32 years. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — Chick Coron just might know more secrets than anyone else in Ishpeming. It just seems that when someone sits down in Chick’s barbershop chair, he’s making a friend for life. Even after 47 years in the same barbershop, the Ishpeming native isn’t ready to retire. “I’ve got everyone from lumberjacks to judges for customers. It’s a nice diversified business,” Chick said.
