SKANDIA — Les Johnson, retiring chief of the Skandia-West Branch Fire Department, passed the gavel and congratulated newly elected chief Bob Goodwin. One of the original members who helped organize the department in 1963, Johnson served in the department for 32 years. He has also been a member of the Skandia-West Branch First Responders since it began in 1986. Among his many accomplishments as chief, Johnson was voted Firefighter of the Year by the Marquette County Firefighter Association in 1984 and helped lead the department to an overall victory of the 99th annual U.P. Firefighters tournament in 1993.

NEGAUNEE — Robert Brock will be installed as master councilor of Negaunee Chapter, Order of DeMolay, in a ceremony in the Negaunee Masonic temple. Glenn Stevens will serve as installing officer. Other officers who will be installed are as follows: Fritz Ameen, senior counselor; Dennis Maki, junior counselor; Roger Kivisto, senior steward; Robert Maki, junior steward; Jerry Maki, scribe; Sig Danielson, sentinel; Robert Uren, treasurer; Mike Hakala, orator; Dave Williams, chaplain; Peter Rahm, marshal; David Ameen, standard bearer; David Kellan, almoner; and Larry Rasanen, Mike Ruhanen, Gary Veale, Ben Vanni, Larry Heiskinen, Tom Stanaway and Nick Linna, preceptors.
