SANDS TOWNSHIP — Marquette county residents interested in high-powered snowmobile racing are in for a treat this weekend. More than 75 racers and their teams in 15 classes will compete for $25,000 in cash prizes at the Marquette County Fairgrounds in the Fire on Ice sprint championships. “The competitors are very evenly matched,” said Myron Hillock of Gwinn, a member of the race board and a participant in one of the stock classes. “This is something we haven’t had here before. I think people are going to like it a lot.” The Fire on Ice board started staging midwinter snowmobile races at the Marquette County Fairgrounds two years ago using the long-distance endurance format, said Carl Gordon of Gwinn, a member of the Gwinn Business Association. They can take several hours to complete, he said. Racing starts each day at 11 a.m. with hot laps scheduled 30 minutes earlier. The race is sanctioned by the United States Snowmobile Association.
