30 years ago PALMER — Cost-cutting measures at the Tilden and Empire iron mines have prompted safety concerns and increased grievances from the United Steelworkers of America. “I think management is putting production over safety in many cases,” said Charles Prusi, grievance chairman for USW Local 4950 at the Empire Mine near Palmer. “For example, [CCI] proposed one electrician where two worked before for safety reasons. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula’s population changed little during the last century, and preliminary state estimates show that trend will continue through the year 2020. Since the 1930 census, the U.P.’s population has varied only by about 17,000 people. For the first time In about 20 years, city police are walking an assigned beat each day. 30 years ago SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE — The Michigan Jobs Commission has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Six County Consortium for Employment and Training. The grant will be used to develop a program of adjustment to assist civilian workers at Sawyer Air Force Base who have been or will be laid off due to the October closure of the base. As many as 900 civilians had jobs at the base at its peak several years ago. Voelker is being inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward, Wis.
