MANISTIQUE — The Negaunee Miners put forth another dominant performance on the court Friday as they rolled past Manistique 63-21.

Aleda Johnson had 16 points to lead Negaunee’s balanced scoring attack, while Hailey Fezatt chipped in 10.

The Miners (2-0) jumped out to a 24-7 advantage in the first quarter and couldn’t be stopped en route to the easy victory.

“We applied some good pressure on them early,” Negaunee head coach Brandon Sager said. “We also moved well in transition and good some easy layups. The girls played well together. Everybody contributed and got some good playing time.”

Negaunee also won the JV game 63-8. The Miners host Escanaba Tuesday.

At Eben, the Cougars overcame an early deficit as well as some foul trouble to outlast the Black Bears.

Taylor Silta led SC with 18 points, while Emma Rondeau had 13 and Tori Tyner had 12.

Down by 13 after the first quarter, the Cougars rallied to be down only 25-21 at the half.

The two teams were tied after the third and fourth quarter sending the game into an extra session. In overtime, SC pulled away to get its first win of the season.

“We got into foul trouble early and fell behind, but the second quarter, things changed,” Cougars head coach Greg Trowbridge said. “We battled back and ate away at their lead. In overtime, we made our shots and put pressure on them to get some steals. We showed a lot of maturity coming back and getting the win. We didn’t give up and we showed what we were made of.”

SC also won the JV game, but the score was unavailable. The Cougars play Monday at Stephenson.

Chassell 61, Republic-Michigamme 32

At Republic, the Hawks put forth a solid first half, but the Panthers pulled away in the second to get the win.

Junior Shawna DuMoulin led R-M offensively with 16 points.

The Hawks trailed only by one point after the first quarter and were down just 23-20 at the half. However, the Panthers outscored R-M 19-5 in the third to take control of the game.

“We had a very good first half and Shawna was on fire,” Hawks head coach April Radcliffe said. “Our shot selection was good and we moved the ball well. I also think we rebounded well and played tough defense. In the second half, they got some second chance opportunities and pulled away from us.”

Chassell also won the JV game 35-16. The Hawks host North Dickinson Tuesday.
