KINGSFORD — The Marquette Senior High School girls varsity soccer team moved above the .500 mark by defeating Kingsford on a windy day at the Flivvers’ field 3-1 on Tuesday evening.

“We are so proud of this group for continuing to improve each game and bring their best energy, effort and attitude every day,” Sentinels head coach Laura Wayland said in an email detailing the result. “This was a good win for our team and we look forward to our next game.”

Visiting MSHS, which improved to 3-2-1, scored the only goal of the first half when junior Anabel Ollila scored off an assist from senior Erin Phillips.

The Sentinels more than offset Kingsford’s second-half goal with two of their own. Senior Lily Eberhard capitalized on a free kick to make it 2-0, then she scored another goal unassisted that made it 3-0 before the Flivvers could break through.

Marquette hosts a three-team round-robin set of games at the Superior Dome on Northern Michigan University’s campus on Friday afternoon and evening.

The Sentinels face Kingsford for the second straight game, this time at 4 p.m. Friday, then square off against Boyne City at 8 p.m.

Admission is $5 and tickets are available online through GoFan.
