Sentinels, Cougars post volleyball sweeps

MARQUETTE — Marquette and Superior Central each won three-set sweeps on the volleyball court on Tuesday, the Sentinels defeating Menominee and Cougars taking down Stephenson.

The only area team shown playing this weekend is Marquette at the downstate Elk Rapids Invitational on Saturday morning, while five matches are on tap for Tuesday, each at 6:30 p.m. or 6:45 p.m. — Marquette at Negaunee, Manistique at Ishpeming, West Iron County at Gwinn, Westwood at Jeffers and Dollar Bay at Superior Central.

Here are details from Tuesday’s matches:

Marquette 3, Menominee 0

At Menominee, the Sentinels won 25-18, 25-16, 25-14 in their Great Northern Conference opener to even their overall record at 1-1.

Marquette started off “a bit slow,” according to MSHS head coach Melissa Butler in an email detailing the result, before finding their rhythm.

She cited libero Lilly Demeuse for a strong defensive presence and consistent serving, Grace Filizetti for controlling the net with a dominant performance, and setter Harlow Davis for running the offense smoothly and keeping the team organized.

Superior Central 3, Stephenson 0

At Eben, the Cougars prevailed 25-19, 25-12, 26-24 to improve to 3-0.

SC had a number of solid statistical performances, according to head coach Kris Bray.

That included sophomore Kylie Stuer leading the team with 10 kills and eight service aces while also contributing three digs and a block.

Sophomore setter Lilly Simon had 12 assists, three digs and two blocks, while a pair of freshmen were also quite versatile — Aubri Kroupa had three digs, a kill and an ace, and Violet Porter added a kill, dig and assist.

Junior Peyton Adams had two kills, senior Marissa Strohm had five digs and four aces, and junior Rory Hancock 10 digs and an assist.
