Patriots sweep, Hematites go 1-1 at triangular meet

ISHPEMING — Westwood swept a pair of matches at a high school wrestling triangular meet held at the Patriots gym on Thursday night.

Westwood defeated Kingsford 48-25 and Ishpeming 63-10. In the third match, the Hematites edged the Flivvers 30-29, but no details were available from that match.

“It’s always fun to wrestle at home and a couple of team wins make it even better,” Westwood coach Dan Carlson said. “We were happy to see the fans come out to support us.”

Carter Guidebeck was the lone Patriots wrestler who got to wrestle two matches and won both. At 152 pounds, he pinned Ishpeming’s Kain Delongchamp at 45 seconds and pinned Kingsford’s Carlie Rundell at 53 seconds.

Against the Hematites, Westwood’s Sam Gilles at 189, Josh Bartle at 285, Wyatt Carlson at 119 and Tyler Lindholm at 130 won by pins, while teammate Alana Nuorala at 125 won by decision.

Against Kingsford, the Pats’ Jackson Vidlund at 171 won with a pin.

For Ishpeming in the match against Westwood, Andre Walsh at 215 won with a pin and Alaric Martin at 171 won by decision.

On Saturday, Ishpeming will be among several area teams participating at the Manistique Super Duals, while Westwood is off until the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet scheduled for Negaunee on Feb. 3.
