Westwood Patriots pull out boys tennis win over Ishpeming, Negaunee Miners cruise 3 times over in 2 days

ISHPEMING — Ishpeming put up an excellent fight against Westwood before the Patriots prevailed in a high school boys tennis meet held at the Hematites’ courts on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the steamroller known as Negaunee met little resistance in matches against Gwinn on Tuesday and Ishpeming and Munising on Wednesday.

Here are details from each match:

Westwood 5, Ishpeming 3

On Tuesday at Westwood, the Patriots won the “upper” Nos. 1 and 2 flights while the Hematites prevailed in the “lower” Nos. 3 and 4 flights, except for one — the one that determined the meet.

Westwood No. 3 singles player Mason Hietikko easily dispatched Ishpeming counterpart Joey Giroux 6-0, 6-0 to give the Pats’ the fifth match win they needed to clinch the meet.

“Today was our first home meet after playing five matches in four days last week,” WHS head coach Sarah Massie said in an email detailing the result.

She was particularly pleased with the outcome at No. 1 doubles, where Westwood’s Cameron Mahaffey and Reid Frustaglio outlasted Ishpeming’s Hayden Hares and Hunter Smith, 6-4, 6-4.

“(Our) No. 1 doubles had to battle in a close match,” Massie said. “Cameron and Reid are starting to figure out their style of game in this spot and are improving every match.

“We’ve had some adjustments to our lineup from injuries and absences for various reasons over the past week, but these guys have all played hard and have been competitive in any spot they’ve had to play so far. That’s exciting to see.”

Westwood also got victories from No. 1 singles player Andrew Niemi and No. 2 singles player Patrick Klumpp, along with the No. 2 doubles duo of Jaxson Alderton and Jayce Patron.

The Hematites won both matches that went three sets. At No. 4 singles, Tramon Gauthier fended off Mitchell Ford 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, while at No. 3 doubles, Ben Rubick and Adam Maki came back for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Caden Balzarini and Daevon Timmons.

Ishpeming also got a win from Kole Bancroft and Levi Nicholls at No. 4 doubles.

Negaunee 8, Gwinn 0

On Tuesday in Negaunee, the Miners pulled off the rare whitewash, not losing a single game in the five contested matches.

NHS got wins in matches that were played in singles by No. 1 Gavin Saunders, No. 2 Mick Kumpula and No. 3 Tyler Lajimodiere.

In doubles, the Miners won with No. 1 James Thomson and Brady Johnson and No. 2 Blake Holmgren and Carson Lajimodiere.

Negaunee 8, Ishpeming 0

On Wednesday in Negaunee, the Miners did almost as well as the day before, sweeping all 16 sets against the Hematites, going 6-0 in nine of those sets and only dropping a total of 13 games.

The Negaunee singles group was particularly dominant, losing only one game over four flights.

In doubles, Ishpeming’s Tramon Gauthier and Parker Gauthier won the most games, five, against Easton Guenette and Nolan O’Dovero at No. 3 doubles.

Negaunee 8, Munising 0

On Wednesday in Negaunee, the Miners never dropped more than one game in any set en route to another sweep of an opponent.

Munising managed to win just five games total, including two by Dimetri Balko and Mike Robinson at No. 2 doubles vs. Negaunee’s Holmgren and Carson Lajimodiere.

“It’s great to play two dual (meets) in a day and have to stack performances,” NHS head coach Kyle Saari said in an email detailing both matches’ results, singling out Johnson and Thomson at No. 1 doubles, Quinn Walters and Kolten Store at No. 4 doubles, and Saunders at No. 1 singles for praise.
