Marquette Redmen baseball team fends off Gladstone Braves 6-5 to even record at 5-5

GLADSTONE — The Marquette Senior High School baseball team held off a late rally by the home team on Wednesday as the Redmen evened their season record at 5-5 with a 6-5 victory at Gladstone.

The Braves scored the game’s final two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull within a run, but got no more. Their rally featured a double by Tyler Darmogray, his third hit of the game as he knocked in four of his team’s five runs.

MSHS opened the scoring with four runs in the top of the first after Gibson Jezewski hit a home run and Easton Miller an RBI double.

After Gladstone clawed back within 4-3 after two innings, the Redmen scored twice more in the top of the fourth to re-establish a 6-3 advantage.

Miller and teammates Peyton Davis and winning pitcher Isaac Sarles each went 2 for 4 as Davis hit a double and finished with two RBIs.

Jake Toyras and Luke Mead also had hits for Marquette.

Sarles went all six innings, allowing five runs — only three of them earned — on seven hits and three walks as he struck out four.

Gladstone starter Braden Sundquist was tagged with the loss. He went three innings, allowing all six Marquette runs — though only three of those were earned — on nine hits and two walks as he fanned four.

Reliever Brennan Detiege also threw three innings for the Braves, allowing no runs, no hits while walking one and K’ing four.
