Engine keeps humming: Marquette boys soccer team posts mercy-rule 8-0 win over Iron Mountain

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team built a five-goal halftime lead and ended the game early with an 8-0 mercy-rule victory over Iron Mountain at the Kaufman Sports Complex in Marquette on Thursday.
“Our team played good ball,” Redmen head coach Dan Salmon said. “Iron Mountain played hard right to the end and kept fighting, so we had to remain vigilant.”
Max Dawson continued his propensity to score goals with the first two as his team improve to 9-0.
Michael Poggi assisted on Dawson’s first tally and Ethan Sandstrom on the second.
Ezra Pickard, Axel Vermaat and Enzo Stabile added goals later in the opening half to make it 5-0 by the break. Assists on those goals went to Grant Salo, John Weber and Vermaat, respectively.
Marquette added three more goals in the second half to end the game early. Goal scorers were Zane Phillips, Sandstrom and Kaleb Chipelewski with two assists going to Pickard and one to Evan Sysko.
Teammate Isaac Johnson had a relatively stress-free night in the Redmen goal as he faced two shots.
Marquette plays at Kingsford on Tuesday
