EAST LANSING — The Upper Peninsula was shut out from honors in both MHSAA Divisions 1 and 3 when the Michigan Sports Writers organization decided on All-State girls basketball awards this week.
Marquette, the lone U.P. team in Division 1, won its district tournament with victories over Traverse City West and TC Central before bowing out to Midland in the regionals.
Menominee reached the furthest of any U.P. team in the Division 3 tournament, bowing out in the regional finals to Roscommon 56-40 on March 12. Locally, Gwinn and Westwood each reached district finals before falling to Menominee and Calumet, respectively.
Here are details on the Michigan Sports Writers choices for all-state in the two divisions. MSW took the place of The Associated Press in selecting these teams a few years ago, though the AP still distributes the lists:
Division 1
Lilly Williams of Howell was not only voted the Division 1 All-State Player of the Year, but also chosen as Miss Basketball, the honor for the state’s best high school girls basketball player.
Williams was cited for averaging 18 points, 12 rebounds, six blocked shots, two steals and two assists per game this season. Set to play at Michigan State, she led Howell to a 23-2 record, including wins over Belleville and Milford, as the Highlanders won the West Division of the Kensington Lakes Activities Association.
But Howell bowed out fairly early in the MHSAA Division 1 tournament, losing to Belleville in the regional semifinals less than two weeks after defeating the same team to end the regular season.
The D-1 Coach of the Year fared better in the tourney as Bernard Loudermill led Muskegon to the state championship at Michigan State University on March 21, defeating Detroit Renaissance 34-29 for the title.
