Sentinels baseball splits 4 games downstate

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School baseball team split four games played downstate in two days over the weekend.

The Sentinels played at MHSAA Division 1 Traverse City Central on Friday, losing both those encounters, then headed to Charlevoix on Saturday, where they won both games vs. the Division 3 Rayders.

Marquette (3-5) hosts Superior Central for its home opener in a single game at 6 p.m. today, adding in another half-dozen games this week, all those games also at its home Haley Memorial Field in north Marquette.

The Sentinels face Wakefield-Marenisco in a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Wednesday, then host Ironwood in a 4 p.m. Thursday twinbill, then play single games vs. Westwood at 6 p.m. Friday and Houghton at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Here are details from the downstate doubleheaders:

TC Central sweeps

On Friday in Traverse City, the Trojans won 13-3 and 9-0.

In the opener, Desmond Gleason led Marquette with two hits as he and Easton Jezewski each had an RBI.

TCC scored multiple runs in each of the first three innings, then added five runs without benefit of a hit in the fifth.

Sentinels starter Aidan Mason allowed eight runs — but only four earned — on two hits in his four innings as he walked six and struck out four.

In the nightcap, the Trojans scored once in the first inning and three more times in the third.

Jonas Snapp started for MSHS, allowing three runs — all unearned — on one hit and two walks as he K’d one in just two-thirds of an inning.

Snapp was also 2 of 3 at the plate.

Sentinels win 2

On Saturday in Charlevoix, Marquette found its hitting shoes, rolling up 18-2 and 17-1 victories.

In Game 1, Wes Robinson led Sentinels batters with three hits and three RBIs, doubling in the second inning while singling in the third and fourth. Jezewski also had three RBIs.

Marquette was particularly patient at the plate, drawing 14 walks, including three by Snapp.

The Sentinels also jumped out right away, scoring 11 runs in the opening inning as Snapp, Jack Keough, Robinson, Gleason, Jezewski and Snapp all drew bases-loaded walks to each bring in a run.

Keough also had an RBI single, Drew Erickson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score one, and two errors scored a total of three more runs.

Gleason hit into a fielder’s choice in the second to bring in a run, while he and Robinson each had RBI singles in the third, the same inning that an Evan Brown walk and error each brought in a run.

Lefty Alex Brennan started for MSHS, allowing two runs — both unearned — on three hits and two walks as he fanned seven in 2 1/3 innings. In relief, Gleason went 1 2/3 innings, not allowing a run, hit or walk as he K’d three.

In Game 2, Jameson Sandstrom and Jacob Geller led Marquette hitters with three hits apiece, Sandstrom including a double in his collection for a total of three RBIs. Jezewski and Trey Niemi also had three RBIs each.

The Sentinels didn’t get out to quite as explosive of a start in this game, but still had an early lead. A Gleason RBI single and Jezewski groundout each brought in a first-inning run, while Robinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in another in the second to make it 3-0.

Four more runs came home in the third with Brown, Jezewski and Geller RBI singles and a Niemi RBI groundout making it 7-0.

The real knockout blow was delivered in the sixth, when the Sentinels tacked on eight runs. Sandstrom hit a two-run single, while Luke Korpi, Jezewski and Geller collected RBI singles. Niemi also grounded out and Brown walked and a steal of home each scored a run.

Robinson started for Marquette and went 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks while K’ing six. Gleason, Korpi and Daniel Grampie followed on the mound.

Jezewski had three of his team’s seven steals as the Sentinels also drew six walks.
