Carney-Nadeau’s Tessa Wagner a tough matchup for Munising Mustangs girls basketball team as Wolves win Saturday, 64-24

CARNEY — Tessa Wagner proved to be a tough matchup for the Munising girls basketball team here on Saturday.

So did the rest of the Carney-Nadeau Wolves in a 64-24 basketball rout of the Mustangs.

The 6-foot-3 junior center scored 27 points in this Skyline Central Conference contest, helping the Wolves improve to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the league.

“Tessa is a tough matchup for just about anybody,” C-N coach Ken Linder said. “We had three score in double digits. We’ll take that anytime. We had pretty good balance.”

Senior Heidi Kirschner added 11 points and sophomore forward Shae Linder had 10 for C-N, which led 23-0 following a reverse layup and free throw by senior guard Haley Ernest with 5:49 left in the second quarter.

“She (Wagner) is absolutely the real deal,” Munising coach Matt Mattson said. “She’s a fantastic player who always provides tough matchups. You don’t see many girls who are 6-3.”

The Mustangs (1-4 overall, 1-3 SCC) got on the board 37 seconds later on a lay-in by junior Jenna Matson.

C-N, which led 31-6 at halftime, started the third stanza with a 13-2 run and extended its advantage to 44-8 on an eight-foot set shot by Wagner at 3:10.

The Wolves led 51-17 after the third frame and by as much as 59-19 following a layup by senior Taylor Kedsch, set up on a pass from senior Chloe Grand midway through the fourth.

Matson scored 12 points for the Mustangs, who committed 17 turnovers.

The Wolves had 15 miscues, including a few against Munising’s full-court pressure defense early in the fourth quarter.

“Jenna played all right,” Mattson said. “She plays hard all the time. We have to build around her a little. We wanted to pick up the pace and condition the girls. We wanted to get them to go up and down the court a little bit.

“In the second half, we played better than in the first. They weren’t missing their shots, and we couldn’t get one to go down.”

The Wolves also won the JV game 60-41.
