Toys for Tots thankful

On behalf of the Marine Corps League Lake Superior Detachment 764, we extend our sincere gratitude to the community for their support of the Toys For Tots Campaign in 2025. Through generous contributions and active participation, our campaign successfully collected more than 4700 toys, 1975 stocking stuffers, 469 books, and over $12,300 in monetary donations utilized for purchasing additional toys. These donations were distributed to local families in need throughout Marquette County, bringing a brighter holidays season to more than 1,650 children in our community. All toys and monetary ...

Biology Trumps bigots

The recent shenanigans of certain members of the Houghton County Board are but a microcosm of the deeds being perpetrated against fellow human beings by the Trumpist "christian" right wing nationalists all across the USA. They wish to force on us a policy that there are only two sexes, a man with only X-Y chromosomes, and a woman with only X-X chromosomes. Physicians and scientists know this is not true. It was fortunate that Dr. Shelby Owen was present at the Tuesday Dec. 9 meeting to present facts contrary to the proposed resolution. She shared the facts that Turner syndrome (only 1 X ...

Local business went extra mile

I would simply like to extend my compliments to Spice Merchants. I recently placed an order with them over the phone, but could not pick up the order until the next day. They were most accommodating, and, due to the rather non-accommodating Christmas parking rules in town, they offered to run the package out to me if I just called and let them know I was there, or coming. This was a breath of fresh air, rather than have to fight to find a close parking space, or return in the afternoon for the few hours of free parking. Way to go, Spice Merchants! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Prop was political theater

On Dec. 9, I was in attendance in Houghton in opposition to a proposed resolution that would codify there being only two genders in Houghton county policies and public records. But I realized there that this really wasn't about transgender Americans or issues related to their public life. It was a political stunt. Political theater pandering to a segment of the voter base who are vocal about cable news talking points, but not truly in tune with the issues of their community. That voter base didn't turn out at this meeting. Overwhelmingly, the most common sentiment expressed by those ...

New Year’s American spirit resolution?

I was thinking about this holiday season and the division the country is experiencing due to identity politics. One research study by social psychologists found, “1 in 5 adults is estranged from a close relative due to political differences. One-third of American adults reported feeling uncomfortable at family gatherings because of political views, and many feel justified in treating each other with disdain.” I believe Mark 3:25, "If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand", references losing the Holy Spirit. Our Framers didn’t hold hands and sing in harmony ...

Democratic socialism?

Zohran Mammdani was recently elected mayor of New York City. He ran a successful campaign advocating Democratic Socialist principles. Trump denounced him as a communist and instead tends to advocate unregulated capitalism as the best way to govern. Brief descriptions of these are: communism (common ownership, abolition of private property, classless society), capitalism (private ownership, pursuit of self interest over common interest, competition over cooperation), socialism (public or government ownership of property, limits on extreme wealth gaps, cooperation over competition). These ...
