Is Bergman listening?

To the Journal editor: To Congressman Bergman: Concerning attacks on unarmed boats in the Mediterranean, your office’s Oct. 23 email stated, “Congressman Bergman will continue to review the situation in light of his responsibilities in Congress and his commitment to upholding the Constitution.” Six members of Congress, veterans or former members of the intelligence community, released a video addressing military and intelligence personnel. The video reiterated the truism that no one is obligated to comply with an illegal order. The president condemned the video, stating that ...

He works for us

To the Journal editor: To the president of the United States: (Now that it's) 2026, I have a request and a reminder for what I hope will be a goal for you and your administration in 2026. A small background: I am a 70-year-old RN and a lifelong Democrat. I acknowledge and support the right and the necessity of people in this country, who have different opinions to have civil discourse and be able to work together for the betterment of this country. My request for you, Mr. President is to eliminate the coarse, juvenile and immature language you use when talking to or describing ...

Why I teach and why I support Invest in MI Kids

To the Journal editor: Every morning, I walk into my classroom and see the future, full of hope and possibility. My students are curious, creative, and capable of changing the world – they remind me every day why I became a teacher. I love my students, and I want them to have every opportunity to succeed. Every year, teachers spend more of their meager salaries (on average climbing to ...

One person is not representative of all people of that demographic. To this day ...

Misusing our military

I need to speak out against how our military is being used. Twice now, first bombing a government facility in Iran, and now abducting the president of Venezuela, we have unconstitutionally committed acts of War on other nations without congressional authorization. These missions were very successful; objectives achieved, few casualties, no immediate fallout. These successes feed a powerful narrative: Americans are strong, Americans get the bad guys, Americans are heroes.   That narrative is dangerous. This story of national strength and military success historically leads to ...

Center should remain open

As a retired National Weather Service meteorologist with two degrees in atmospheric science, I was outraged to read the Trump Administration has proposed the elimination of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado. This center has provided high quality atmospheric research in the U.S. since its establishment in 1960. According to NCAR, the organization advances atmospheric science breakthroughs by providing the research community with leading-edge modeling, observational tools and computing resources. The elimination of NCAR is part of Trump's strategy to limit climate ...
