Give peace a chance
To the Journal editor:
I would like to believe that as a civilization we would evolve not only intellectually, but at the same time, learn how to focus our vast multitude of cultures on the goal of striving for peace and the well-being of each and every person. At this point in our history I think it would be fair to ask the question, why is there such widespread anger and violence encroaching on the human race? Why are we fighting each other rather than supporting and holding each other up?
One would think we’d have surpassed the desire to perpetuate this anger and violence in our lives. How unstable the human race must be to create weapons of mass destruction in order to exert that threat against our fellow human beings. I think about what a fantastic world it would be if we focused our attention on altering our current direction and refocusing our energies toward a world absent of anger, fear, and violence. Think about that for a moment and imagine what that world would be like. Which world would you prefer to live in? That should be a pretty easy question to answer should it not?
I’ve often wondered why we as a human species would choose to create weapons that would guarantee mutually assured destruction on both sides. There’d only be losers. No one comes out the victor. Have we reached that proverbial point of no return? I don’t believe so. Do we have the ability and desire to make a course change? I certainly hope so. Would it be a difficult task? No question about it. One would have to be incredibly naive to think otherwise. But do we really want to contemplate the alternatives? All tasks large or small begin with a single step, and that first step can be the most important one. Let us strive for peace for all of humanity.
