Opposes Prop 3
To the Journal editor:
Proposal 3 does not protect existing abortion option. Rather, it is a Constitutional amendment that will annihilate all existing laws that protect both the unborn and women.
What you read in the summary on the ballot is misleading and misrepresents the proposal’s actual language, except for the “invalidating all state laws” part.
Michigan abortion laws now protect women in many ways. For one, only licensed doctors can performe them. Proposal 3 says “in no circumstances shall the state prohibit an abortion that in the professional judgement of an attending health care professional….(is needed — even for mental health’)” Not “licensed.” Not even “physician.” Is 2 years “professional” enough?
Secondly, Proposal 3 says “Nor shall the state penalize, prosecute, or otherwise take adverse action against someone for aiding or assisting…(in getting an abortion.)”
So a woman – your daughter? – is harmed but will have no legal recourse?
Speaking of daughters, parental consent for their minor children will go, under Section 4, read on.
Michigan has many other laws that regulate abortionists and abortion centers which thus safeguard women. We have laws to prohibit chemical poisons; that require reporting complications; that require abortion centers to satisfy the same minimum health standards as other surgical centers and laws to restrict advertising by abortion centers – thus a discouraging profit-over-safety environment. All those laws were fought by the same people behind Proposal 3. They are against ANY “restrictions.”
Many women have chosen to see an ultrasound, as afforded them by current law. A photo on the website supportmiwomenandchildren.org shows a 12-14 week old baby – and makes it easy to understand why many women are thankful they had such a choice.
No such choice if Proposal 3 passes.
We now have a 24-hour waiting period law for time to think; informed consent – not “lets not tell here.” Proposal 3, Section 4 will invalidate all of these, saying “a state interest is “compelling,” only if it… does not infringe on that individuals autonomous decision-making.”
What law doesn’t infringe …? The seat belt law infringes on an individual’s decision to help him/her avoid injury or death. Same with sped limits. So out go all the “infringing” abortion laws.
Four hundred words infringes on my ability to inform you more. Suffice to say, Proposal 3 is extreme! Nurses, doctors, hospitals will no longer be able to decline abortion regardless of term! So much more! Support miwomenandchildren.org.
