30 years ago MARQUETTE — Volunteers are being invited to plant flowers in the eighth annual Petunia Pandemonium Saturday morning in south Marquette. About 23,000 petunias will be planted along U.S. 41 South at the entry to town, beginning at 10 a.m. A practice planting session for children will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Women’s center. Each youngster will be able to pot a petunia and take it home. The event is sponsored by the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — The NICE school board will hold a special meeting Thursday to narrow down the list of architectural firms for the design of a new school. The board hopes to decide on a list of three potential candidates for the task of designing the $9 million kindergarten through 8th-garde school to be build near Westwood High School. Construction on the school is expected to begin this summer. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — Westwood High School has earned a national accolade for its women’s sports program. And the result is that the school will receive a financial boost to its athletic program through winning a first-place award from a national cooperative of cranberry and grapefruit growers. Ocean Spray Cranberries Inc., announced the award of $10,000 for Westwood High School based on its strong women’s athletic program. The Michigamme River covered County Road L.G. in seven places this morning that were passable only by truck. In some places, the road, also known as River Road, was 3 feet deep. 30 years ago MUNISING — Alger Underwater Preserve officials are soliciting reservations to attend the June 1 sinking of the tugboat Steven Selvick in Munising Bay. The tugboat is being sunk as a dive attraction for the preserve, the first such event in state history. A tour boat from Pictured Rocks Cruises in Munising will be used to bring attendees to the sinking location.
