30 years ago MARQUETTE — Although fewer high school students dropped out in the 1994-95 school year than the previous year statewide, most Superiorland schools reported dropout rates that were a fraction of the state average. Statewide, the dropout rate for the year fell to 5.2 percent from 6.6 percent the year before, according to Education Department analysis. The department attributes the decline — a 1.4 percent drop— in part to better record-keeping by school district. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — For many lovers of the northwoods, spending a quit evening along the shores of a tree-lined lake in a snug little log cabin is only a dream. Later this summer, however, that dream will come true for “campers” who head to Harlow Lake in the Little Presque Isle state Recreation Area north of Marquette. Construction there on six rustic cabins is expected to be complete soon. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — At least a dozen residents have complained to the Ishpeming Township Board about vandalism in their community. Many complain that youth go about the township unsupervised, vandalizing homes, speeding in cars and playing loud music. Charles Rose, a 35-year township resident, has documented numerous case of vandalism at his home over the past year and a half. Rose lives near the township park, which has a basketball court, baseball field and tennis courts. The park has kids in it at all hours of the night, he said. 30 years ago HARVEY — The state has ordered Harvey Oil Company to clean up gasoline-contaminated soil and groundwater and to pay for replacing at least 10 residential wells. In an Administrative Order issued Tuesday, the Department of Environmental Quality said the contamination “poses a substantial endangerment to the public health and welfare of the environment.” The order requires Harvey Oil to comply within 30 days, because of the risk to public health, legal tactics cannot be used to delay action, said DEQ Environmental Quality Analyst Carol Stuht. 90 years ...

30 years ago MARQUETTE — The official count of people preregistered for FinnFest USA ’96 has now passed the 4,000 mark. The benchmark comes just one month after the count had’ passed 3,000 —and still two months before the national ethnic festival set to take place in Marquette, from Aug. 7 to 11. The 4,000 pre-registrants have: Surpassed the final counts of registered participants for all but one of the previous 13 FinnFest USA festivals.
