30 years ago MARQUETTE — Chocolay Township has turned its garbage collection over to a private company beginning today, and the pickup day for most township residents has changed. The Chocolay Township Board approved a five-year contract in April with Northern Refuse, Inc. Starting July 3, collection will include curbside pickup of recyclable materials. 30 years ago MUNISING — When 130 Munising High School students planted 3,000 trees on school forest land near Melstrand recently, forestry experts and educators hoped more than seedlings would take root. Teacher Ted Williams has been working to develop a management plan for the 40-acre school forest plot. Williams plans to use the school forest, which includes an additional 80 acres near Wetmore, for hands-on demonstrations of the principles of forestry, biology and environmental science. 30 years ago MARQUETTE — Volunteers are being invited to plant flowers in the eighth annual Petunia Pandemonium Saturday morning in south Marquette. About 23,000 petunias will be planted along U.S. 41 South at the entry to town, beginning at 10 a.m. A practice planting session for children will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Women’s center. Each youngster will be able to pot a petunia and take it home. The event is sponsored by the Marquette Beautification and Restoration Committee. 30 years ago ISHPEMING — The NICE school board will hold a special meeting Thursday to narrow down the list of architectural firms for the design of a new school. The board hopes to decide on a list of three potential candidates for the task of designing the $9 million kindergarten through 8th-garde school to be build near Westwood High School. And the result is that the school will receive a financial boost to its athletic program through winning a first-place award from a national cooperative of cranberry and grapefruit growers.
