ESCANABA — Disaster was narrowly avoided in a logging truck fire in Wells Township on Monday.
Escanaba Public Safety was dispatched at approximately 4:43 p.m. to U.S. 2 and U.S. 41 just east of I Road.
“From what I understand, there was a volunteer from another department close by when it happened. He called to let us know what was going on and that we probably wanted mutual aid,” said Escanaba Public Safety Lieutenant Jeff Erickson.
No fatalities or injuries were reported because the driver was able to exit the truck prior to the cab becoming engulfed in flames. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Officers were able to curb any more danger by extinguishing the fire before it would extend to the full load of wood the truck was carrying.
If one is witness to a vehicle fire, Erickson recommends staying clear.
“You don’t know what’s going to happen, bumper’s going to explode, gas tank’s going to explode, certainly keep your distance and call 911,” he said.
EPS was assisted on scene by the Ford River Township Fire Department, Delta County Sheriff’s Office, Gene’s Towing, Delta County Central Dispatch and one good samaritan.
“There was a gentleman who lived right nearby who offered his logging truck to come unload all the logs so it could be towed away, which I thought was very nice of him,” Erickson said.
