MARQUETTE — From 1-4 p.m. May 2, Marquette’s chapter of ABUMCS will host a Family Field Day at the MARESA office on Ohio Street in Marquette. The event is free and will feature a variety of outdoor activities designed for people of all abilities.

“ABUMCS is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with mobility challenges with the goal of creating independent mobility for all,” said Marquette’s AMBUCS chapter president Samantha Eckert. “Our mission is to empower people to conquer challenges related to mobility and independence through a local community network, by providing recreational opportunities and adaptive equipment including AmTryke Adaptive Tricycles and other forms of community service.

“Our Marquette chapter was started in 2023 and has successfully funded over 40 AmTrykes to individuals throughout the Upper Peninsula. We have also started the Milestones and Mobility Loan Closet which is a community-driven collection of donated adaptive and mobility equipment based in Marquette, MI, managed by the Marquette Chapter of AMBUCS,” she said. “Available items include wheelchairs, walkers, bath chairs, standers and more. Equipment is available for free short-term, long-term or trial use, and must be checked out by a licensed therapist.”

During Family Fun Day, Marquette AMBUCS will celebrate all that they have accomplished over the past few years in the Upper Peninsula.

“The purpose of the event is to gather families together to celebrate inclusion and community togetherness,” said Eckert. “We will have a variety of activities designed for all ages and abilities. Donations are optional and will go toward providing future AmTrykes to individuals in the community. This event is open to all families, not just those of individuals with special needs.”

Activities on offer during the event will include bag toss, bowling, parachute, and more! A calming room will also be available. From 3:30-4 p.m. there will be a group bicycle/tricycle parade in the parking lot where participants are encouraged to bring their own Amtryke, tricycle, bicycle or other recreational equipment to participate.

“Shout out to our event partners: BayCliff Health Camp, MARESA, Special Olympics, SAIL and Project Jade,” said Eckert.
